How to get .22LR ammo – wait patiently or check out ammo tracker sites

Having a gun is fun and all, but without ammo, it is just a big paperweight. After spending the better part of my Monday evening with DROS paperwork at the gun counter, I set off on my mission for .22 ammo the next day.

I didn’t realize that it would be a challenging mission. After all, America is the land of the free and the 2nd amendment right? Acquiring a 325 round box of .22lr should be as easy as walking into the local Wal-mart.

Should be, but its not. Store clerks I’ve talked to at Bass Pro, Big 5 and local gun stores always tell me the same thing “Nope, we’re out.” Ugh, frustrating!

(They’re probably tired of answering too. I remember what it was like working at Gamestop the year the Nintendo Wii came out. “Do you have it in stock?” “No? Are sure there are none in the back?” “Can’t you check?” “You didn’t go back and check.” Oh man, that year sucked.)

The brick-and-mortar chase for ammo was getting tiresome so I bought a box online at roughly $0.14 per rnd, after shipping.

I had to do the same chase around in cyber space too until I came across these two sites that monitor major online ammo retailers and update when a particular site has new inventory of .22lr ammo in stock. Check out wikiarms and gunbot.  I’ll warn you now, if the entry is more than a few hours old, it’s likely to be out of stock already.

I’m annoyed about having to pay what I consider a “premium” price because I’ve heard other shooters reminisce on the old days when .22 was a nickel a round. I guess this is all the effects of supply and demand.

With the Obama administration and stupid things like the M855 its-banned!-sorry-mistake-its-not-banned-yet-haha-suckers issue, there’s a run on ammo. With store shelves empty and stock levels unreliable, every person with a gun has turned into an ammo hoarder.

It makes me a little bit sad (and angry) that the current political and economic climate has made it so difficult for citizens to exercise their rights.
